Thank you very much f or purchasi ng a Si gma Lens. In order t o get the ma ximum
performance and enjoyment out of your Sigma lens, please read this instruction booklet thoroughly before you start to use the lens. DESCRIPTION OF THE PARTS (fig.1) DC LENS These are special lenses that are designated for digi tal cameras because the lens im age
circle is desi gnated to correspond to t he size of the image se nsors of most di gital SLR
cameras. The speciali zed design gives these l enses the ideal properti es for digital cameras.
◆ An image sensor element l arger than those corresponding to AP S- C cannot be used in
digital cameras or 35mm SLR cameras. If s uch an element is used vi gnetting will occur
on the picture surface.
◆ If you use SD14 / SD10 / SD9 di gital cameras, corre sponding angle of vi ew will be
30- 85mm.
ATTACHING TO CAMERA BODY When this lens is attached to the camera body it will automatically function in the same way
as your normal lens. Please refer to the instructi on booklet for your camera body .
◆ On the lens mount s urface, there are a number of couplers and ele ctrical contacts.
Please keep t hem clean to ensure pro per co nnection. T o avoid damaging the l ens, be
especiall y sure to place the lens with its front end do wn while changing t he lens.
◆ Many accessories suc h as rear mo unted teleconverters, e xtension tubes, etc., are
speciall y made for designated l enses. Before yo u purchase s uch accessories, pl ease
check your Sigma lens to determine that i t is compatible an d that the accessori es will
function properly with it.
SETTING THE EXPOSURE MODE The sigma lens functi ons automatically after mounting to yo ur camera. Please, refer to the
camera instruction book.

For autofocus operati on, set the foc us mode switch on t he lens to the “AF ” positi on (fig.2). If
you wish to focus ma nually , set the focus mode switch on the lens to the “M ” posi tion. Y ou

For autofocus operati on, set the camera to AF mode and set t he focus mode switch on t he
lens to the “AF ” positi on (fig.2). If you wish to focus ma nually , set the focus mode s witch on
the l e ns t o t he “M ” positi on. Y ou can adjust the foc us by turning the focus ring. (I n the case
of Fo ur-Third s cameras it is necessary to swi tch the camera to MF mode as well )

set the camera’s focus mode to “M” a nd a dj ust the foc us b y t ur ning th e fo cus ri ng.
◆ Please refer to camera’s inst ruct ion ma nua l for detail s o n changing t he camera ’s
focusing mode.
◆ The viewfinder of some Nikon AF cameras have indicators to di splay the focus status.
The “● ” symbol indicates that correct focus has been set, “
► ” indicates that focus is set in front of the subject, and “
◄” indicate s that focus is set behind the subject. W hen
this AF lens is used with Nikon AF cameras in MF mode, please adj ust th e lens’ focus
unti l the “● ” symbo l is vis ible .
◆ T o avoid damagi ng AF mech a nism, please do not turn the focus ring manuall y while in
the autofocus mode.
◆ When operating this lens in manual focus mode, it is recommen d ed that correct focus be
confirmed visuall y in the viewfinder rathe r than relyi ng on the distance scale. Thi s is
due to possi ble focus shift resul ting from extreme c hanges in temperat ure which c ause
various compone nt s in the lens to expand and contact. S peci al allow ance is made for
this at the infinity setting.
◆ In the case of Four Thirds l enses, the fu ncti o n of AF- S mode wi th MF override is no t
availabl e.
《Zooming 》
Rotate the Rubber grip on t he zoom ring to the desi red position.
《Zoo m Lock Switch 》
This lens is al so equipped with Zoom Lock Swi tch to eliminate the zoom creep w hen the
lens is tilted down. Please set zoomi ng ring to 18mm and set the zoom l ock switch to the
“LOCK” positi on . (fig. 3)
MAGNIFICATION The indication of the lens as “1:xx ” o n a focusing distance scale represent the magni fication
(commonly called the reprod uction ratio). For e xample when you are in focus at t he “1: 3”
posi ti o n on t he s cale, a subject with an actual si ze of 3cm will have an i mage size of 1cm
on the firm. ( fi g.4)
LENS HOOD A bayonet type detachabl e hood is provided with the lens. This l ens h ood helps to prevent
flare and g hosted images caused by bright ill umination from outside the pi cture area.
Attach the hood and turn clockwi se until it stops rot ati on. (fig.5)

When taking pho tographs usi ng the bui lt- in flash, it is advisabl e to remove the lens hood so
as to avoi d cutting o ff any of the flash ou tput, which could cause a shadow i n the pictur e.
◆ In order to pl ace the lens and hood into t he storage case, you m ust first remove the
hood, then replace i t on the lens in the rev erse position. (fig.6)
FILTER ◆ Only one filter should be used at the time. Two or more filters and/or speci al thicker
filters, like a polarizing fil ter , may cause vignetti ng.
◆ W hen usi ng a pol arizing filter wi th AF camera, use the “cir cular” type.
BASIC CARE AND STORAGE ◆ Avoid any shocks or exposure to e xtreme high or l ow temperatures or to humidity .
◆ For extended storag e, choose a cool and dry place, prefera bly with good v entilation. T o
avoid damage to t he lens coating, keep a way from mothballs or naphthalene gas.
◆
Do not use thinner , benz ine or other or ganic clean ing agents to r emove dirt or finger pri nts
from the lens element s. Clean by using a s oft, mo i stened lens cloth or lens tissu e.
◆ This lens is not waterproof. When you use t he lens in the rain or near water , ke ep it
from getting wet. It is often impractical to repair the internal mechanism, l ens elements
and electri c component s d amaged by wat er .
◆ Sudden temperature changes may cause condensation or fog to appear o n the su r face
of the lens. W hen entering a warm room from the cold out doors, i t is advisable to keep
the lens in the case until the temperature of the lens approaches room temperature.
